The Vola tap was designed in the 1960s, and that tap remains unchanged today. Vola taps are a piece of design history – the original concept for Vola taps established Vola as the much sought after design it still is today, still modern, still contemporary. Obviously the Vola range has been extended over the years, but Vola taps stand for timeless design. Vola Taps came about as a result of the fusion of talents between the owner of Vola – the manufacturer Verner Overgaard – and the architect Arne Jacobsen; their vision produced the Vola tap, a tap with a wall-mounted mixer where all the mechanical parts were concealed within the wall, leaving only the spout and handle visible. Much of the design work from Michael Wright Furniture is minimalist and contemporary in nature, so Vola taps fit comfortably with this.
Vola taps first went into production in 1968 and won immediate international acclaim and design awards from the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Kunstgewerbe Museum in Cologne and the Cincinatti Art Museum, among others. Not just functioning pieces of kitchen and bathroom hardware then, more pieces of art. Since then, Vola taps have undergone much advancement in technical innovation and production techniques and this has allowed Vola taps to significantly extend their range.
