Michael and his son Eli, together with other Dads and sons from Belmont Grosvenor School, will be taking part in the Great Yorkshire bike ride on 5th June, from Wetherby to Filey, which is 72 miles to cycle in a day! Michael has persuaded his local GP to go along too - useful in case of any mishaps… Michael is seen regularly training on the roads of North Yorkshire scaring the motorists in his shorts! It’s all for an excellent cause however, as the charity is Martin House Children’s Hospice. If anyone would like to sponsor him, let us know at MWF.

The latest project at Michael Wright Furniture is a barn conversion in the Harrogate area.

The latest project at Michael Wright Furniture is a fabulous barn conversion in the Harrogate area. As we have mentioned previously MWF undertake full house re-furbishment as well as specialising in kitchen design. This project is somewhere in between..The barn is attached to the main house - a beautiful grade two listed building and is being developed to house a full height kitchen and dining area with utility room.

The work has started at ground level with drains dug to the main island and sink run and concrete slabs have been overlaid.

Each design throws up something new to consider - currently the lighting (one of Michael’s favourite topics as you know from our last newsletter!) is undergoing a re-think. The original idea was to hang lights from the full height of the ceiling, but the proportions of original barn walls to ceiling spoils the aesthetic. To keep the original theme but develop it to fit the look, the current plan it so run a tracking system between two frames, so lowering the lighting point of origin and then hang pendants from the track.

Keeping on the subject of blending modern looks and technology with the buildings original beauty and framework, the main wall in the kitchen will house a TV and media system but finished in natural stone and a painted plaster finish throughout the rest of the kitchen.

We will keep you abreast of developments each month in our newsletter…

Michael Wright Furniture is exhibiting, for the first time, at the Grand Designs Exhibition with a huge Effeti Kitchens and Interiors stand, showcasing kitchen design, living furniture and a fantastic audio visual installation.

It’s been so busy on day one of the Exhibition, Michael has had to call for emergency replenishment stocks of brochures and business cards! It’s really satisfying to see so many people falling for these beautiful Italian designs.

Michael is on hand for personal consultations, along with other highly experienced members of the Effeti team from the UK and Italy.

It wasn’t a first, but there was no cause for disappointment, only celebration, at a fantastic event masterminded by Designer Magazine at Lord’s Cricket Ground where over 350 of the great and good of the design world gathered to celebrate the work of just 12 designers.

In that sort of company, coming second doesn’t matter a jot. Just being recognised and celebrated by such people is reward enough.

The marvellous and ever-fascinating Philippe Starck was there to recieve a Lifetime Achievement Award. Quite right too. He gave an at times perplexing, and at times thoroughly inspiring speech, which when it came to kitchen design, introduced the themes of cavemen and the discovery of fire!

Not sure if Neanderthals would appreciate the fine lines of Michael’s exquisite kitchen designs, but the reference rightly reminds us that there is something quite fundamental about a kitchen. Happily though, we have now mastered basic survival, and can revel in feeding our friends and family in rather more elegant surroundings.

The full report from the awards will be featured in the next issue of Designer Magazine so watch out for photos - coming soon.
